Fantasy Baseball: In The Batter’s Box

By: Joe Bond

So after a week off, I’m back with a new article.  A few players really broke out last week that are already owned in most leagues but if they are still out there I would get them over all the players mentioned below.  Those players are Trevor Plouffe, Colby Rasmus, Aaron Hill, and Marco Scutaro.  Of course as always there are new players emerging as somebody you should add on your team if you have some struggling player or need injury replacements.  Anyway enough of the opening statement, lets get to it.

Brian Roberts (2B – Bal) – Brian Roberts has finally returned from injury, after battling through them for the last two seasons, and has started a lot better than I thought he would.  Already in just six games played he has 4 RBI and 1 run.  He has hit safely in four out of five games so that is another good sign.  Most likely have plenty of days off as the Orioles will look to take it easy to avoid re-injury, but when he plays he should be a good source of production for your team, especially in deeper leagues..

Ike Davis (1B – NYM) – I mentioned Paul Goldschmidt in my last Batter’s Box article and his horrendous start only to turn it around, well Davis is doing the same thing.  He is currently on a 9 game hit streak with 2 home runs, 11 RBI, 6 runs while batting .461.  It is hard to pick him up over the perennial top first baseman but he is definitely worth an add as a utility guy right now.

Ben Revere (OF – Min) – Not a sexy pickup by any means but one that won’t disappoint you except in the power department.  In the last 15 games he is batting .386 with 8 RBI and runs and to make up for that lack of power he has 6 stolen bases.  It looks as though he has supplanted himself as the Twins starting right fielder, so if that holds up he could definitely provide a boost in steals and runs for your team the rest of the season.

Seth Smith (OF – Oak) – How he is only owned in 6.9% of ESPN leagues after the way he has played the last half of the month baffles me.  In the last 15 games he has a .447 average, 3 home runs, 10 RBI and 9 runs.  He should get plenty of time in the Athletics OF with Cespedes battling injuries and even if he comes back Smith deserves a spot in the lineup with the way he is swinging the bat.

Brandon Moss (1B/OF – Oak) – Moss was called up on June 6th and been one of the hottest hitters in baseball since that time.  He has 6 home runs, 11 RBI and 10 runs all while batting .350.  I don’t think he will keep up a pace anywhere close to that the rest of the year, might even  become droppable at some point, but I’d ride the hot bat while you can if you can fit him on your team.

Omar Infante (2B – Mia) – Infante started the year off so great and was even featured as an add in my week one article. Well how things have changed.  He has had a couple of injuries this year that kept him out of a few games twice so maybe he is still being bothered by those, but either way his June stats have been horrible.  Hitting only .175 with zero RBI and steals, adding only 3 runs. It is time to get rid of Infante if he is still on your team, perhaps for Brian Roberts if he is available.

Dayan Viciedo (OF – CWS) – Viciedo had a tremendous month of May posting 8 home runs, 24 RBI and 18 runs all while batting .351.  Since then he has only batted .140, with 1 home run, 2 RBI and 3 runs.  I know he has sat out of a few games on the road when the White Sox play National League teams due to the lack of a DH, so perhaps that is bothering him.  But you just can not hold onto Viciedo when he is playing the way he is now and there is no history of him consistently playing like he did in May.

Will Middlebrooks (3B – Bos) – This one is tough for me since he played so well while Kevin Youkilis was out, but he just is not getting consistent playing time and you can tell it’s affecting him.  In June he has 0 home runs, 3 RBI while only batting .212.  A lot of that has to do with him already sitting 4 and pinch hitting in 2 of the Red Sox 15 games this month.  There are rumors swirling that Youkilis will get traded but until then you can’t hang onto Middlebrooks in standard leagues.
