Los Angeles Dodgers Sign Teoscar Hernandez

Los Angeles Dodgers Sign Teoscar Hernandez

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Teoscar Hernandez to a one-year contract worth $23.5M. Hernandez leaves Seattle after just one season in the Pacific Northwest. The Mariners had the option to extend a qualifying offer to the outfielder but decided not to.

Other teams rumored to be interested in Hernandez include the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels. Hernandez is 31 years old and has 159 career home runs in 3209 plate appearances. His performances have earned him one All-Star Game appearance (2021) and two Silver Slugger awards(2020, 2021). All three of these achievements came as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays

Hernandez will likely bat sixth in the lineup with his new team, behind Max Muncy and in front of James Outman. Being on this stacked Dodgers offense will surely help Hernandez. It's possible, however, that batting sixth in the lineup could hurt his value in Fantasy Baseball.

Biggest Takeaway

Draft the top-end Dodgers early. Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and even Will Smith will be priced at a premium this season. However, that premium is going to be well worth the cost.

Fantasy Six Pack's own Joe Bond ranked Betts as the top second baseman in Fantasy Baseball and Freeman as the top first baseman. Smith comes in as the third-ranked catcher.

I believe these are the ones that benefit from adding a slugger like Hernandez to the lineup.

Teoscar Hernandez with the Seattle Mariners

Hernandez spent just one season with the Mariners, arguably his worst since 2018. He finished with a career-low walk rate (5.6%), placing him in the bottom 20 among qualified batters. His on-base percentage (.305) also ranked in the bottom 20. On top of this, Hernandez recorded his worst slugging percentage since his rookie season 2016 when he played 41 games as a member of the Houston Astros.

The outfielder batted in various spots of the lineup throughout 2023. This ranged anywhere from third to seventh. Overall, it was a disappointing season for the veteran outfielder as he failed to meet expectations. It's no surprise to see Hernandez depart from the Mariners.

Teoscar Hernandez's Fantasy Impact with the Los Angeles Dodgers

As mentioned above, Hernandez will likely bat sixth in the Dodgers lineup but could move up to fifth against left-handed pitchers. Batting sixth isn't ideal for Hernandez's Fantasy value, who was seen as a high-end outfielder in 2023 Fantasy Baseball drafts.

Fantasy managers drafted Hernandez as one of the top 100 players in 2023. Expect him to be closer to an Average Draft Position (ADP) of 150, but don't be surprised if he falls close to the 200 ADP mark this season.

Adding Hernandez will take away playing time for Jason Heyward and Manuel Margot. Miguel Vargas and Michael Busch will likely begin the season in Triple-A. These two are now top trade candidates for the Dodgers.

Teoscar Hernandez'z Departure Impact on the Mariners

The Mariners have already found their replacement for Hernandez in Mitch Haniger, who they acquired from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for starting pitcher Robbie Ray. Having played just 61 games in 2023 and missing most of the season with various injuries, it's unsure how much Haniger will play in 2024. If Haniger were to miss time, the probable replacement would be a mix of Dylan Moore and Sam Haggerty.

Final Thoughts on Teoscar Hernandez

Once again, my biggest takeaway from this addition is to draft the Dodger's star players early on. This includes Betts, Freeman, Ohtani, and Smith.

Hernandez has a lot to offer Fantasy teams, but at times, his low walk and high strikeout rates hold back his power. These tend to be my least favorite players unless the price is right. I'm not actively targeting the outfielder, but if I see Hernandez falling around pick 175, he could end up on my team.
