Philadelphia Phillies Sign Trea Turner

Philadelphia Phillies Sign Trea Turner

The Philadelphia Phillies sign Trea Turner to an 11-year contract worth $300M. Turner decided to leave the Dodgers after spending the last year and a half with them. The Dodgers did offer a $19.65M qualifying offer to Turner, but he declined. It's unsure what other contract offers they sent his way.

Almost every team was interested in signing Turner this offseason, but the Phillies won the bidding war for the premier shortstop in baseball. Turner is currently 29 years old, meaning this contract will carry him through his age 40 season. Turner will surely lose Fantasy Baseball value as he gets older, but his value in the short term is incredible.

I projected Turner to resign with the Dodgers in my Best Landing Spots for 2022-23 Free Agents article. This was due to their star-studded lineup, but Philadelphia is a great place for Turner as well. He'll be batting with Bryce Harper, J.T. Realmuto, and Kyle Schwarber among others.

Turner has played with the Dodgers since August 8, 2021, and batted either first, second, or third in the lineup. During his time in Los Angeles, he slashed .307/.353/.490 with a 134 wRC+. Turner also belted 31 homers and stole 38 bases. His walk rate was 6.4%, and his strikeout rate was 17.6%.

The shortstop won his first career Silver Slugger Award in 2022 by slashing .298/.343/.466 with 21 home runs, 101 runs, and a career-high 100 RBI. He was the best shortstop in Baseball by a long stretch and solidified himself as a first-round pick in Fantasy Baseball drafts.

Trea Turner's Fantasy Impact with The Philadelphia Phillies

Turner's impact on his new team will be extreme. Turner is the best shortstop in baseball and is a favorite to win another Silver Slugger in 2023.

I project him to bat first in the lineup. This will significantly benefit the top of the Phillies lineup and increase the Fantasy value of Schwarber, Realmuto and Harper. Getting Turner, however, will improve the entire team's Fantasy Baseball value.

There is always a player that does not benefit because they are headed to the bench. Bryson Stott is that player in this case. In 2022 Stott slashed .234/.295/.358 with 10 homers and 12 stolen bases across 466 plate appearances.

Even without Turner, the Dodgers will still be one of the best teams in MLB. We likely see a drop in runs scored for Mookie Betts and a drop in RBI for Freddie Freeman. However, Betts and Freeman are still MVP caliber players and therefore do not lose much Fantasy Baseball value from Turner leaving.

The Likely replacement for Turner is a former top prospect, Gavin Lux. Lux has slashed .253/329/.383 with a 99 wRC+ across 1003 plate appearances in four seasons with the Dodgers. Lux has the potential to be great, but he is still a significant downgrade from Turner. Fantasy managers can draft Lux in the 15-20 rounds in Fantasy Baseball drafts.

There are still plenty of top free agent batters on the market including Aaron Judge. The departure of Turner may increase the likelihood of them signing Judge or one of the other top free agents.

The prospect to watch in the Dodgers organization is Jacob Amaya. The Dodgers selected Amaya in the 11th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Amaya made 351 plate appearances in Triple-A this season and slashed .259/.368/.381 with a 94 wRC+. He will likely make his MLB debut in 2023, but it's unlikely he will make a significant impact. Nonetheless, keep an eye on Amaya in spring training.

Final Thoughts on Trea Turner

Turner is the best shortstop in baseball and he's going to the World Series runner-up, the Philadelphia Phillies. If Philly had Turner for the 2022 World Series, they likely could've won. This move is great for Turner and his odds of winning another Silver Slugger are immense.

If Turner does wind up batting leadoff, then we'll likely see a decrease in runs batted in, but don't be surprised if he sets a career-high in runs scored. Nonetheless, Turner needs to be selected in the first round of Fantasy Baseball drafts this season.
