The Texas Rangers made the biggest splash of the offseason to date, signing 31-year-old middle infielder Marcus Semien to a seven-year $175 million deal.
The Rangers have now added Corey Seager to the mix as well!
Semien is a career .256/.324/.444 hitter, breaking out in 2019 before having a career year in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays that saw him finish third in the AL MVP voting.
In 2021, Semien hit .265/.334/.538 45 HR, 115 R, 102 RBI, 15 SB .368 wOBA, 131 wRC+, and a 133 OPS+.
Marcus Semien joins a Texas Rangers team that finished 60-102, good for 5th in the AL West. He immediately becomes their best player.
Texas Rangers Sign Marcus Semien
Marcus Semien Fantasy Preview
2021 ADP: 132
Career: .256/.324/.444 .330 wOBA, 109 wRC+, 110 OPS+
162 game averages: 25 HR, 92 R, 77 RBI, 13 SB
Semien's ADP will improve from 132, however, Globe Life Field may keep him from jumping too high in Fantasy Baseball drafts. Add in the poor Rangers offense, and Semien's counting stats may suffer.
A lot will depend on who they bring in around Semien. If they acquire one of the other big free agent shortstops, then it will help his projections.
Semien should be good for 25-30 HR with a possibility of getting to 35+ HR. He is projected to hit the top of the lineup, and he is good enough to get on base, meaning he should score plenty of runs. He probably does not score 115 runs again but projecting him near 100 runs feels right.
The RBI projection will depend on how much help he has because RBI is an opportunity stat. A lot will ride on current Ranger, Adolis Garcia, and how legit his 2021 season was. Garcia being legit and adding one to two more solid bats could provide more RBI opportunities. For now, 90 RBI might be a solid projection.
Semien provides excellent value on the base paths. Check out his stolen base totals since 2015:
- 2015- 11
- 2016- 10
- 2017- 12
- 2018- 14
- 2019- 10
- 2020 (shortened season)- 4 (10-11 pace over a full season)
- 2021- 15
If healthy, he is almost guaranteed to reach double-digit steals and could get up to 15 stolen bases for a season. Semien could provide 30/15 value and solid runs and RBI numbers.
Semien is projected to hit .260, and his career 9% walk rate will help his value in any format.
Texas Rangers Preview
Marcus Semien immediately became the Rangers franchise player. He will help an offense that had an 84 team wRC+ in 2021, good for 28th in baseball.
The biggest question is when will the Rangers compete? Outside of more big signings this winter, they are potentially two years away from competing. The Semien signing could attract more names.
The Rangers still have a long way to go to climb out of the AL West cellar. The Astros are the team to beat in 2022, however, the Athletics might begin a rebuild this winter. The Mariners and Angels could also make things tough with strong off-seasons. Can the Rangers jump four teams in the division or fight for a wild card spot in the AL that required 92 wins? Time will tell.
Marcus Semien the Start of a New Era?
The Rangers have been going through a rebuilding stage for a few seasons, and fans and ownership are hungry for a competitive team. Semien could just be the beginning as well, as he is talented enough to draw interest from other names.
He broke out in 2019, but for his career, he is worth 4.6 WAR per 162 games played. Even if it takes a year to bring in the other names, this could be the start of a new era for Rangers baseball.
Overall, Marcus Semien should provide terrific value for Fantasy Baseball managers in all formats and this should be an exciting time for fans of the Texas Rangers.
