Tomlin’s Tips: 2019 Week 5 Football Bets

It happens to all of us. If anyone says it does not, then they are lying. I got destroyed last week with an 0-5 NFL slate and 2-6 in NCAA. The good news is that the rest of my picks made up for it hitting on my tease and clearing my over pick easily.

Tampa Bay covered the over by themselves. The tease was never really in jeopardy either, since the Bucs won outright. What went wrong with the NFL best bets?

The Colts just got their doors blown off by Oakland, however, the Raiders had some luck to jump out to a 14-0 lead. Indy is not a come-from-behind type team so it snowballed a bit. I under-estimated how good Daniel Jones and Kyle Allen both are, killing two of my other picks. Then the Patriots failed to cover by just a single point.

I’m turning it around this week though! It will be profitable or you will get all of your money back! (Thank God this is a free article.)

As always, a simple disclaimer: sports betting should be entertainment. The Week 5 Tomlin’s Tips will not make you rich. Anyone with picks saying they can make you rich is a liar and I would bet against them. Week 5 Tomlin’s Tips will be about having fun wagering on sports while trying to stay even or break a small profit.

So let’s get to the Week 5 Tomlin’s Tips. All of the information in the Week 5 Tomlin’s Tips is up to date as of October 3rd.

NFL Week 5 Tomlin’s Tips

Best NFL Bets: 0-5 last week, 9-10-1 overall

Each week I will pick my five best bets for the NFL weekend.  This is similar to the most famous handicapping contest in the world, The Las Vegas Supercontest, where the winner gets around a million bucks.

San Francisco 49ers -3 vs. Cleveland Browns

Which is the real Cleveland Browns team? The one that blew the doors off of Baltimore last week? Or the one that got beat by 30 against Tennessee? I just do not trust them on a weekly basis. OBJ could start complaining at any moment about not getting the ball as well.

Pittsburgh Steelers +4 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Speaking of the Ravens, they have really come back down to Earth the past two weeks. Meanwhile, the Steelers might be finding their stride with Mason Rudolph at quarterback. This totally feels like a field goal game so you are getting massive value with the home dog.

Chicago Bears -5.5 at Oakland Raiders (London)

Are we sure that Chase Daniel isn’t better than Mitch Trubisky? There are rumors out of the locker room that some players are happy about the switch. Daniel has been in Matt Nagy’s offense for years so the playbook may open up more.

Tennessee Titans -3 vs. Buffalo Bills

Fun fact: the only starting quarterback in the NFL without a turnover is Marcus Mariota. He has been taking care of the ball extremely well. If Josh Allen is out, I think you are getting a couple of extra points not built into the line already.

Indianapolis Colts +11 at Kansas City Chiefs

I’m not sure that I trust the Chiefs with more than 10 points anymore. Their defense has just not been up to par. If Marlon Mack and T.Y. Hilton play, this will be a shootout that will definitely be closer than the eleven given.

Other Games Picked: 7-2 last week, 21-18 overall

I’ll put my picks in for all of NFL games. Some people are in pools where the pick every game each week. Home teams are in CAPS.

BENGALS -3 over Cardinals

PANTHERS -3 over Jaguars

GIANTS +6 over Vikings

REDSKINS +15 over Patriots

EAGLES -13.5 over Jets

SAINTS -3 over Buccaneers

Falcons +5 over TEXANS

Broncos +7 over CHARGERS

Packers +3.5 over COWBOYS

Survivor Pool Plays: 0-1 last week, 3-1 overall

One of the most popular games now is survivor pools. You pick one winner, no spread, every week. You can never use the same team twice.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles are the second-biggest favorite of the week, but biggest at home. If you have them, use them.

Other Options, 2-0 last week, 8-0 on the year: New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers

NFL 10-Point Teaser of the Week: 1-0 last week, 3-1 overall

My brother and I’s favorite bet: you take 10 points extra either off or on the spread. You combine three different teams with the 10 extra points and all have to hit to win.

Packers +13.5, Patriots -5, and Chiefs/Colts OVER 45.5

Aaron Rodgers is not losing in Jerry World by two touchdowns, I can promise you that. The Redskins are not keeping it within a touchdown against the Patriots, I can almost guarantee that. Toss in the weekly Chiefs over and that’s our tease for the week.

Game Total of the Week: 1-0 last week, 2-2 overall

Chicago Bears at Oakland Raiders, UNDER 40 (London)

The Bears could shut the Raiders out. Don’t be fooled by a one-week aberration. If Chase Daniel starts for Chicago, they could go even more conservative.

College Best Bets: 2-4 last week, 9-14 overall

Oklahoma St. Cowboys -10 at Texas Tech Red Raiders

I’m going back to the well against my alma mater. The Oklahoma offense got whatever they pleased against the supposed revamped Tech defense. The Red Raider offense looked out of sorts until the third-string for the Sooners was in. Oklahoma St.’s offense is not that far down from OU’s. The Cowboys will be able to run at will in Lubbock and easily win by a couple of touchdowns.

Cincinnati Bearcats +4 vs. UCF Knights

This is a huge trap game for UCF. They had the crushing loss to Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago, and while it looked like they got it behind them they actually let UConn back into the game last week. Cincinnati is better than they are given credit and will pull out the Friday night upset.

Kansas St. Wildcats -1.5 vs. Baylor Bears

Kansas St. went into Starksville, Mississippi and beat a solid SEC team. Baylor played no one in non-conference. I just feel like I know more about the Wildcats and what they bring to the table.

Oregon Ducks -17 vs. California Bears

California was able to stifle the Mississippi offense and pull out a big road win. They will not have such an easy task with Justin Herbert this weekend. Oregon can back their way into the playoff conversation. If Auburn keeps winning, then there is an outside shot for the Ducks so expect them to keep the pedal to the metal in blowouts.

SMU Mustangs -11 vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

I’m riding the Mustang Express until they let me down. They are 5-0 straight up and against the spread as well as ranked for the first time since the mid-’80s. I think Sonny Dykes has something special going and they take care of business again.

Iowa Hawkeyes +3.5 at Michigan Wolverines

Take last week’s blowout of Rutgers out of the conversation. Would you feel confident in laying more than a field goal with this putrid Michigan offense? Especially against a really good team in Iowa?

Florida Gators +3 vs. Auburn Tigers

In what should be a low-scoring slugfest, getting three points with the home team and better defense is the way to go.
